Active Release Technique

Active Release Technique® (ART) is a movement based massage technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. Headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions that can be resolved quickly and permanently with ART. These conditions all have one important thing in common: they are often a result of overused muscles.

How do overuse conditions occur?

Over-used muscles (and other soft tissues) change in three important ways:

  • Acute conditions (pulls, tears, collisions, etc),
  • Accumulation of small tears (micro-trauma)
  • Not getting enough oxygen (hypoxia)

Each of these factors can cause your body to produce tough, dense scar tissue in the affected area. This scar tissue binds up and ties down tissues that need to move freely. As scar tissue builds up, muscles become shorter and weaker, tension on tendons causes tendonitis, and nerves can become trapped. This can cause reduced range of motion, loss of strength, and pain. If a nerve is trapped you may also feel tingling, numbness, and weakness.

Laser Therapy

Fleetwood Chiropractic is excited to offer laser therapy to Surrey patients for the treatment of sports injuries, arthritic conditions and a variety of chronic or degenerative conditions. This technology involves the application of light energy of specific wavelengths and power levels on injured and/or abnormal tissues. The light energy is absorbed by various molecules within the cells of these tissues and converted to biochemical energy which initiates a number of positive physiological responses. The result is the stimulation of tissue healing and regeneration and restoration of normal function.

Laser therapy is non-invasive, non-toxic and with no known side effects. Unlike other forms of radiation, laser therapy is beneficial rather than harmful to tissue with hundreds of research studies demonstrating its safety and effectiveness. Because low intensity laser therapy works at the cellular level, this enables it to have applications on a wide range of medical conditions. Some of the more commonly treated conditions include:

Massage Therapy

Massage therapy is the manipulation of the soft tissues of the body including muscles, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments and joints, to help decrease pain and improve mobility. By increasing circulation and the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the body, massage is able to help promote the body’s natural healing process.

Massage therapy can be used to treat acute and chronic conditions including stress, headaches, neck and back pain, sport injuries, arthritis and more. RMTs work with a wide variety of patients in the treatment of illness, injury rehabilitation and disability.

Orthotics

You feet have a direct impact on the rest of your body. Like the foundation of a house, your feet support the weight of everything above them. Because of this, small problems in your feet can lead to compensations in your posture and walking mechanics, which can later on develop into problems such as low back pain, iliotibial band syndrome, patellar tendonitis, shin splints, achilles tendonitis and plantar fasciitis.

Orthotics are custom made medical appliances designed to correct your specific foot imbalance; they work on your feet much like glasses work on your eyes. By restoring the normal balance and alignment of your feet, they can help to reduce the stress and strain on the rest of your body.

If you have any questions on whether prescription orthotics are right for you, please book an appointment.
Please note, our clinic does not direct bill insurance companies for orthotic orders, but we can provide you with electronic and/or printed receipts for you to submit to your insurance provider.
